Phonics Statement of Intent

Miss Lawson is our subject leader for English.

“I studied English Language and Literature at A-Level and at University and earned a degree in Primary Teaching with English.  This strong subject knowledge - and a love for the subject - allows me to enthuse not only the children but also the staff.

As the English subject lead, I have a passion for the power of reading, writing and the spoken language because they are the tools which give children access to a whole new world of learning!  English helps children access the whole curriculum and build better communication skills.   It is so important that at Higham St. John's, we enable the children to develop that love of English and in particular, reading.

I can often be found lost in a book or encouraging the children to love, understand and use new and unusual words.  By promoting and fostering this love of reading and writing throughout the whole school, our children will flourish in English.”
